Canadian Literary Association of Higher Education
The Canadian Literary Association of Higher Education (referred to as “CLAHE”) is a non-profit organization registered with the Government of Canada. Established with the aim of providing a platform for literary enthusiasts with a Chinese cultural background from various universities, CLAHE fosters literary exchange, mutual learning, and improvement of literary skills. The association upholds the values of “Care and Innovation; Honesty and Gratitude; Integrity and Kindness; Equality and Respect; Inclusivity and Humility.” Guided by the principle of prioritizing character, CLAHE seeks to enhance the quality of literature, initiate and oversee all its activities, and promote community service through the medium of literature and the arts.
Background and Development
In the fall of 2015, at the Toronto joint conference of alumni associations from 46 Chinese universities, the Canadian Literary Association of Higher Education was initiated as a WeChat group by Mr. Haijun Yang (pen name: Yuanye), the founding president of the Xi’an Jiaotong University Toronto Alumni Association, alongside presidents of several other university alumni associations. The association was officially registered in September 2020.
After its establishment, CLAHE attracted literary enthusiasts from over 100 universities to engage in discussions and exchanges. Currently, it has more than 460 registered members. Members use WeChat as the primary mode of communication and platforms like Meipian for editing and sharing. The association’s host team develops weekly themes, encourages members to create works, and publishes a “Weekly Collection” based on these themes.
Unique Activities
One of CLAHE’s hallmark activities is the “Weekly Theme,” where members create poems, essays, micro-novels, and other literary pieces around a central topic. These creations, showcasing talent and creativity, spark lively discussions, constructive feedback, and mutual encouragement among members, fostering growth in a positive and interactive environment.
The association also organizes thematic lectures and promotes literary works through its official WeChat public account. Every two weeks, it invites scholars—either members or external experts—to deliver online public lectures covering poetry, essays, fiction, translation, law, philosophy, music, calligraphy, and other literary or art-related topics, aiming to broaden horizons, inspire creativity, and cultivate artistic appreciation.
CLAHE’s official WeChat account is dedicated to promoting outstanding original works by members. Selected works from the weekly themes are regularly featured and widely appreciated by literary enthusiasts, receiving acclaim for their quality and impact.
Reflection and Future Prospects
The Canadian Literary Association of Higher Education (CLAHE) maintains close ties with alumni associations of numerous universities across Canada. Its members come from a diverse range of institutions, naturally fostering a unique and profound sense of alumni camaraderie.
Starting from the 2nd United Chinese University Alumni Spring Festival Gala, and with the trust and support of the organizers, CLAHE has successfully hosted essay-writing activities for six consecutive galas. These events were organized by various university groups, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, the “Three Wuhan Giants” (Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University, China University of Geosciences), the “Six-University Alliance” (Sichuan University, Chongqing University, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Shenyang University of Technology, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, and Sichuan University of Light Industry), and the “Shanghai Six” (Fudan University, Tongji University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, East China Normal University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and Shanghai University).
These essay-writing activities have resulted in the publication of the following collections:
·Beyond the Maple Scene (2018, 2nd gala)
·Hand in Hand, Heading Home for the New Year (2019, 3rd gala)
·Campus Memories, Canadian Bonds (2020, 4th gala)

At the same time, CLAHE’s contributions to essay publication as a public service have become a distinctive highlight of the community.
Since the beginning of 2020, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted everyone’s lives. Entrusted by the Canada-China Economic and Cultural Exchange Association, the North American Chinese Health Association, and the Green Life Senior Care Group, the Canadian Literary Association of Higher Education (CLAHE) successfully organized the special essay competition Facing the Pandemic, Embracing Tomorrow in 2021. The outstanding literary works from this competition were compiled and published under the same title.
Through vivid and heartfelt accounts, members documented and described, in intricate detail, the days when the pandemic raged across the globe. These works vividly portrayed touching and heartwarming scenes of overseas Chinese standing united, supporting one another, caring deeply for their homeland and loved ones, and overcoming challenges together. These literary creations used the power of words to move, inspire, and encourage people while preserving a truthful record of the extraordinary resilience of ordinary lives during this unprecedented crisis.
In 2023 and 2024, CLAHE, in collaboration with the Canada-China Economic and Cultural Exchange Association, planned and hosted the first and second Zhou Jiancheng•TQC construction University Cup global essay competitions. The themes, My Youth, My Dream and New Home, New Life, garnered widespread attention and praise from society. These compelling works, which have been published, continue to inspire countless overseas Chinese and future generations to pursue their dreams with unwavering determination.

To celebrate the seventh anniversary of the founding of the Literary Society, a special essay collection titled “My Life with Literature” was published with the generous sponsorship and naming rights provided by entrepreneur Feng Jiande’s company, Frontop Engineering Limited.
Life is colorful, and vitality is evergreen. It has become a spiritual haven for enjoying the beauty of literature during leisure time or amidst the pressures of work. With members ranging from energetic university students to vibrant seniors in their 80s, CLAHE bridges generations, uniting them in their shared passion for literature.
Life is the ink, and literature is the pen—together, let us create beautiful chapters on the pages of existence. Sincere gratitude goes to all the caring individuals and literary enthusiasts who have supported CLAHE throughout its journey. May we all wish for the continued growth and success of CLAHE!
